TEAM DELTA (PBIS MEETING)
MAY 7, 2009 Minutes
Team Members present at the meeting: Louise Mailloux, David Fanning, Elizabeth Shields, Linda Lussier, Jason Masterson, Jessica Kamer, Susan Canavan, Melissa Rodenheiser, Leslie Morin, Melissa Custer, Erin Dwyer.
Minutes from the April 20 PBIS training day were read and approved.
Surveys taken by the faculty at the April faculty meeting are being collated at the Sherlock Center.
Family Engagement surveys taken by Team Delta members need to be turned in to Linda Lussier. Only six Team members have done so, please get them to Linda as soon as possible.
The acknowledgement system that will be used at NCMS was discussed. Linda Lussier reported on her meeting with the assistant Principal at McCourt Middle School. For their reward they use perforated tickets that students can redeem every other week for prizes in a “Penny Social” format. They can also save their tickets for drawings on larger prizes. The most popular prize is lunch served by the Vice-Principal.
It was decided that the Team would continue to search for ideas on redeeming the “Star Bucks” and also to come up with behaviors that we want to reward.
Jessica Kamer and Elizabeth Shields presented the matrix for bus behavior. No other groups were ready to present their matrices and all were urged to have them ready to present at the next Team Delta meeting, Thursday, May 14.
TEAM DELTA (PBIS MEETING)
April 20, 2009 Minutes
All Team Delta members were present.
The PTO has approved the use of the PBIS, all is needed is for them to complete the paperwork. EBS Survey will be done by the faculty at the next meeting, April 21. The School Safety Survey should be done by the entire school. The Family Engagement Survey will be done by Team Delta members, and handed in when complete. All surveys are anonymous.
The Team identified the eight areas where PBIS will be applied. They are school wide, school grounds, bathroom, hallway, classroom, cafeteria, bus, school events/extracurricular activities.
The Team worked at length on the school wide matrix. The proposed matrix is as follows:
Ready to Learn- expected materials, positive attitude, best effort
Responsible- self advocate, school pride, “keep it clean”
Respectful-expected language, consider others, personal space
Individual matrices will be developed for each area. A classroom matrix will be incorporated within the whole matrix with general expectations. There will be an area for individual grade level teams to put more specific expectations.
Lesson plans will be developed by Team Delta members working in pairs. These lesson plans will be used to teach faculty, staff and students as to what behavior is appropriate in the 8 identified areas.
A pair of team members will create lesson plans for an area. The assignments are:
School Wide: Paula Vadenais & Jay Masterson
Cafeteria: Jay Masterson & Paul Lombardi
Hallways:Linda Lussier & Melissa Custer
Bathroom:Leslie Morin & Erin Dwyer
Bus: Liz Shields & Jessica Kamer
School Grounds: Paul Lombardi & Dave Fanning
Extra Curricular: Marissa Rodenheiser & Susan Canavan
Classroom: Louise Mailloux & Jean Therien
The Team viewed a power point on the acknowledgement system. Tips, guidelines and handouts were studied.
Through consensus the Team decided to use “ Star Bucks” as acknowledgements. Jean Therien will design the “bucks” which will include the new NCMS logo.
Liz Shields suggested that students have an envelope in their agenda in which to keep the “Bucks”. It was proposed that redemption time should be every week with Grade 6 going on Tuesday, Grade 7 on Wednesday, and Grade 8 on Thursday.
There was lengthy discussion regarding redemption time for the “Star Bucks”, and what the “Star Bucks” could redeem. Some ideas presented were: lunch on the stage, pen, pencil, VIP section in the cafeteria, VINS Very Important North Star, Lunch outside, homework pass, I Tunes Card, Speed pass to the front of the line at lunch, Borders Card, Subway Card, Lunch with a teacher, Principal, or vice-principal
Dave Fanning also mentioned that some items from the school store could be given for redemption.
Linda Lussier and Susan Canavan will go to McCourt Middle School to see how they handle redemption time and what students are able to redeem.
At the next PBIS Training, May 15, we will continue discussing the acknowledgement system and also how to respond to inappropriate behavior.
The Team viewed a Power Point on Active Supervision.
Team Delta will have two meetings prior to our next training day. The meetings will be May 7 and May 14 at 2:15 at NCMS.
