Please ask your child if he/she received one of these notices. October, 2011 Dr. Richard Drolet
The Principal’s Corner richard.drolet@cumberlandschools.org
It’s October, which means it is NECAP testing month! Here’s some information for the month of October:
Our late bus started the week of Sept. 12th. It will arrive to NCMS each Monday and Wednesday afternoon to bring any student home who stays after school on a Monday or Wednesday. The late bus pick up time is 3:30 p.m. Students must have a signed pass from the staff member with whom they stayed after in order to ride the late bus. There will not be a late bus on the 3rd Wednesday of each month due to teacher meetings.
NECAP (New England Common Assessment Program) testing will take place this month. The tests will be administered to students during the weeks of October 3rd, 11th, and 17th. We ask for your support in getting your students to school on time and avoiding the scheduling of appointments, especially during the mornings, during these aforementioned weeks. It is also important to make sure that our students are well-rested and have eaten a healthy breakfast (no sugary foods, like sugar cereal or Pop Tarts). In the future, these test results will be mailed home to you and they will be analyzed by teachers and school administration; the data from these high-stakes tests will also be used to assist us with placing students. All students are tested in mathematics and reading, and 8th grade students will also be tested in writing.
The Wellness Company, through the R.I. Dept. of Health, will be administering the flu vaccine to NCMS students on Friday evening, Oct. 14th, from 4-7 p.m. at here at NCMS. If you are interested in this flu vaccine for your child, please make sure you have submitted the proper paperwork, which was distributed to students in September. Additional information and permission slips can be found on the RI Dept. of Health website. Please contact our school nurse/teacher, Ms. Kelly, with any related questions.
We will host our October Parent Coffee Hour on Monday, October 31st, at 9 a.m. All parents/guardians are welcome to attend (no dressing up for Halloween, please). J
The first quarter will close on November 10th. Report cards will be mailed home the following week.
We have scheduled our two Parent/Teacher Conference nights. Conferences will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The first night will be Thursday, Nov. 17th (for parents of students with last names A-K). The second night will be Tuesday, Nov. 29th (for parents of students with last names L-Z). You should receive your child's 1st quarter report card in the mail prior to these nights. Also, please keep in mind that many teams of teachers might choose to hold team conferences in which you can have a little more time meeting with the whole team of teachers instead of meeting with the teachers individually. You will hear from the team of teachers ahead of time to schedule times on one of these two nights if they choose to go with this alternative arrangement.

With spring just around the corner, this is a good opportunity to review with your child our school attire policy which can be found in detail on p. 20-21 of our Student Handbook. With the onset of the warmer weather, please note that pajamas, tank tops, tube tops, half or cutoff or sheer skirts, visible undergarments, bare midriffs, deeply cut neck lines and extremely short skirts/shorts are distracting. If teachers and/or school administrators deem that your child’s attire is inappropriate, the student may be provided with more appropriate clothing to wear or you may be called to come to school to provide your child with alternate clothing.
This is also a good time to review our school policy regarding electronic devices, specifically cell phones and iPods, with your child. Please note that per the Cumberland Public Schools policy (see the NCMS Student Handbook p. 12) and state law for cell phones, these items are strictly prohibited in schools. While we do not go looking for these devices, students should not use them during the school day. Please be aware of our school policy which states that any time a student is found in possession of one of these items during the school day, it will be confiscated.
“All Band Night” will take place on Wednesday, April 27th, at McCourt Middle School. Also, NCMS's 3rd annual Clam Cake Festival in support of our Band will take place in the NCMS cafeteria on Friday, May 6th, from 4:30 – 7 p.m. Ticket costs: Adults $9.00; Children $6.00 (10 and under); and Children under 3 are free. Clam cakes, chowder (red and white), chicken fingers and fries will be served. You can buy tickets in advance from a Band member by filling out an order form available in the NCMS main office, or just pay at the door the night of the event! Please e-mail Mrs. Kunis, the Band Boosters President, at normak@cox.net with any questions. Lastly, our Band will be playing the National Anthem at 7 p.m. at the Pawsox game at McCoy Stadium on Friday, May 13th. Tickets can be purchased from either Mr. Bowser or Mrs. Kunis.
The April Parent Coffee Hour will take place on Friday morning, April 29th, at 9 a.m. All parents are welcome to attend.
Our 8th graders will be taking the NECAP science tests the week of May 16th. Please be sure to avoid appointments and make sure that your 8th graders are in school and prepared (good night sleep, healthy breakfast) on those days in particular. This assessment, like all NECAP tests, assesses students' achievement of grade-level expectations.
